Poem of the Week: Steve Dalachinsky, Crank it Up

CRANK IT UP (for M.L.M.) on the highline may 1, 2011

crank it up
reality –
crank it up
rest at its base
exchange fruit / bar none
pattern yourself after your fingertips
your patterns ever changing like ever changing patterns
ever changing distances
crank it up –
monotheistic traffic of angels flowing from the parking lot
that is my insides
coal dust parking lot a flowing of traffic flowing from my insides
my window on the world – crank it up
there is no place to go so SLOW DOWN
there is no place to go but toward the ACADEMY
& its dull exciting echo
crank it up – the ECHO – the body as it echoes
thru the bones – the red & yellow bones
the art of choking
persistent obsessions – rest or rant – choking on art
crank it up – krap short prak hoots
pranks & pi as
rest & rant – silly hand out fruit exchange
tan man base of window of body
scars emerging cars emerging
& merging at the vanishing point
french base as body – ARK – around the world of windows of wind chimes
silent behind the windless glass
CRANK THEM UP – listen to their windless silence
the death of the amphitheater its wooden silence brought to life by words
within the amphitheatre
sign of a world of words blown down but not away
by pen man ship
blown over the canal no less burr in the warm brrrrrrrrrrr
crank it up – a world of voices of the world
new work & its awful voice – awe filled yet empty
run more – crank it up – tail wagers rice eaters & happy meals
greedy menus & hokey triangles
choking on patterns – be proud (of your t-shirt)
be proud
(of your hat your muscles your indecisive sex) – crank it up
don’t read – hide yourself behind the window
but allow yourself the space to peer out to peer out
(the old small dog snaps at me from behind the window)
sing an old song – bark don’t bark

far away far away
those things those motors those engines those mechanisms that go GA GA
those mongrels that emerge from the window of my body – barking
seem further & further away as they merge far far away
the invention of perspective & what an invention it was
the art of choking & choking on art / shrubbery
crank it up – up against yourself – crank it up
press yourself against the window & crank it up.
